With all eyes on Afghanistan, JFS is on standby, ready to help those fleeing the unfolding humanitarian crisis. HIAS, along with its nationwide network of resettlement partners, is working to provide immediate assistance for refugees, and is preparing to resettle several thousand Afghans who, by working for the U.S., qualify for Special Immigrant Visas (SIVs). Afghan refugees cannot be processed in-country, and neighboring borders have closed. While unable to help families evacuate, HIAS and its resettlement partners are working to ensure a safe and healthy start for refugees arriving in the U.S. The path ahead is not a short one—thousands of Afghan refugees will need assistance with resources ranging from housing to counseling in the coming months. JFS is preparing urgently to meet those needs for refugee families joining our community—stay tuned for more information about how to help out.
